Is Stitch Fix Worth It? An Unbiased Review
If you've been on Facebook or Instagram at all this past year, I'm sure you've heard of Stitch Fix. I had heard people talking about it for a while, but during the beginnings of the pandemic lock downs, I got the opportunity to try it with great free credit. So, I jumped in and so far it's been a good experience!
All things have good and bad aspects, so I'll do my best to communicate those so you can decide if Stitch Fix is something you want to try for yourself (or a family member)!
What is Stitch Fix?
Stitch Fix is a styling and shopping service. When you sign up, you fill out a style profile and can schedule a "fix". You can schedule a "fix" immediately, or wait until you need something. You can also schedule "fixes" to arrive every month, every 3 months, or only when you want.
Once you schedule a Stitch Fix stylist looks at your style profile and special requests and chooses five items they think you will like. You are sent these five items to try on at home. Keep what you like and send the rest back with a pre-paid label. You are charged a $25 styling fee, but this fee is applied to anything you buy. So, you only pay for what you keep, and there are extra discounts for keeping all five items.
Stitch Fix is great for people who don't have the time or don't like to shop. It's also a great way to try new things you might not otherwise.
It All Started with a Credit
Early in March of 2020, someone I follow on Instagram offered a $75 credit for anyone new to Stitch Fix. This was the best credit offer I had seen and I decided to jump in and try it. Here is the first "Fix" I received a few weeks later:
MIX BY 41 HAWTHORN Arnold Three Quarter Sleeve Raglan Knit Top, $38
SKIES ARE BLUE Edgar Border Print Knit Top, $54
FRENCH GREY Nichelle Knit Maxi Dress, $58
JUDY BLUE Adelene Girlfriend Jean, $58
DEMOCRACY Adler Roll Cuff Bermuda Short, $64
I was pleasantly surprised that my first "fix" was this good. I really liked the colors and patterns of the items they sent me. However, I forgot to mention that I only wanted items I could wear with a "normal" bra, thus the tank top and the maxi dress didn't work.
I have muscular legs and even the girlfriend jeans fit like skinny jeans and since I don't wear shorts much, I didn't feel like the price of the shorts was worth it, even though they fit well. However, I loved the striped top! It is well made and drapes nicely. I've worn it many times since receiving it last spring. While checking out for this "fix" I was given credit to share with others. Through this credit, two friends signed up and I got some more credit for a future "fix"!
My Summer 2020 Fix
Since I still had some credit to use and needed a few more things for summer, I scheduled another "fix". This time I requested spring and summer tops. This is what I received:
KAILEIGH Jolla Mixed Material Knit Top, $38
DANIEL RAINN Brinn Scoop Neck Pleat Detail Knit Top, $58
PINK CLOVER Daisee Button Back Detail Knit Top, $34
DANIEL RAINN Dalenna Crochet Trim Knit Top, $58
JOHNPAULRICHARD Copeland Tie Front Top, $44
I received five spring and summer tops in this "fix". Overall this was a good "fix". I liked all of them except for the tie-front top (it just wasn't my style). The blue striped shirt with buttons up the back was really nice, but the fabric was thicker than I wanted for summer.
And with spending all summer at home and outdoors, I didn't feel like I could justify the cost of the crochet trimmed tank or the pleat detail top, but I really loved them! I did keep the mixed-media top. It was a great casual, but fun top for a summer at home. The one I was sent was too big, but it was so easy to just send it back and receive a different size! I had wondered if this was easy and possible, and it is!
A Fall Refresh
As fall rolled around, I needed a few new things, so I scheduled another "fix":
NINE BRITTON Levie Knot Front Knit Top, $34
PAPERMOON Halls Brushed Knit Two Pocket Cardigan, $44
VIGOSS Sian Bootcut Jean, $68
BRINA & EM Crannell Roll Tab Top, $42
FRENCH GREY Irma Ruffle Tie-Sleeve Top, $38
I really liked all of these styles! I kept the knot front top and the cardigan. I would have kept the grey plaid top but the shoulders were a bit tight and going up a size would have made the rest of the top too big. The jeans were of good quality but did not fit my body shape correctly. The ruffle sleeved top was pretty but not something I would regularly wear in my everyday life. I was given a $100 credit to share with others after this fix. I had a few people sign up so I have more credit to use!
Planning My Next "Fix"
Since receiving my fall 2020 fix, I've heard many more wonderful things about jeans from Stitch Fix. I live in jeans, year-round and will gladly pay for a great fitting, quality pair of jeans. I'm planning to request a bottoms-only "fix" this spring. I will be focusing on cropped jeans (and pants) for spring and summer.
Update: May 2022
Jeans is where Stitch Fix really shines for me! I have a very casual life and wear jeans pretty much every day. I've now kept 2 pairs of jeans, one pair of cropped pants, and one pair of denim shorts. All of these items I've ordered through Stitch Fix's Freestyle program. The Freestyle program allows you to choose specific items from a selection that has been chosen to fit your style profile. While these pants have cost more than I usually spend, it has been well worth it for the quality and fit of these "more expensive" brands!
LILA RYAN Payton Straight Leg Cropped Pants, $88.
DEMOCRACY Kathryn Bootcut Jean, $78
SILVER JEANS CO Elyse Slim Bootcut, $79
DEMOCRACY Adler Roll Cuff, $64
Is Stitch Fix Worth It?
Yes, for some people! As I've gotten older and more understanding of my personal style, I've realized that I'd rather have fewer clothes that of are great quality AND that "feel like me", than many less expensive options.
I still love thrifting and will continue to do it, but I'll also invest in a few good pieces that will serve me well: jeans, versatile tops. While Stitch Fix costs more per item than I usually spend, I'm realizing that the quality and convenience for my closet staples are worth it!
If you hate shopping, or it's hard for you to find time to shop (or to shop without kids in tow), Stitch Fix is a great option!
I’m a customer of Stitch Fix, so if you sign up through my link, you receive a credit to use on your first “fix”. When you order, I receive a credit also, thanks!
